NHS Open Source Open Day
Date: 26th November 2014
Venue: Newcastle Racecourse, England
The NHS England Open Source Programme is creating a diverse range of solutions to increase choice, improve clinical practice and enhance patient engagement, including EHR, ePrescribing, departmental systems such as electronic observations, ophthalmology and integrated cross-community portal solutions.
The first year of the programme has bought numerous open source systems to NHS Organisations as well as a greater understanding and acceptance of open source solutions.
Connected Health Ireland Conference
Date: 24th November, 2014
Venue: Dublin Castle, Dublin 2
IPPOSI and UCD (ARCH) are hosting ‘Connected Health and Me: the Patient Perspective’ in November 2014. Scheduled speakers for the event include Dr Ambrose McLoughlin, Secretary General Department of Health; ePatient Dave, TED Talks (via Skype); Professor George Crooks, NHS; Professor Paddy Barrett (TBC); Dr Matic Meglic, Slovenia; Mr Raul Mill, Estonia; Dr Shane McKee, Northern Ireland; and more.
The conference will also include a ’Health Hack’ workshop where patients, industry, scientists and clinicians will work together to identify technology-led solutions to patient problems.

Real-World Data Collection Enables Evaluating the Safety and Effectiveness of Treatments for Spinal Muscular Atrophy
This exciting initiative combines collecting real-world patient data by neurologists, clinicians and patients to enable clinical research and engagement of spinal muscular atrophy patients receiving treatment.
SMArtCARE is a multi-year joint initiative of neurologists, paediatricians, and patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Spinal muscular atrophy refers to a group of rare genetic diseases resulting in muscle wastage and weakness. Symptom onset can be seen in both children and adults but the most severe form typically presents in children under 18 months old. Until recent treatments survival past childhood was unusual.
